Continued from part 5:
My name is Annie Devon and I am a boxing and wrestling referee.
I would like to tell you about a mixed martial arts (MMA) fight I recently refereed on the other side of the USA.
A friend of mine had been scheduled to referee the match, but when she
suffered a whiplash injury in a car smash she asked me to stand in for
her. I had never refereed an MMA fight before, so this
would be a first for me.
When I got to the venue the organiser took me into his office to brief
me about the "special" fight I would be refereeing:
- It was to be a "twice her age" match meaning that one fighter was
twice the age of the other (this category of fight was unique to this venue)!
- The fight was to be determined by a KO to a count of twenty. A
fighter could not decide to give up and neither could the corner decide
to "throw in the towel". The referee could decide to end the
fight, but this was only to be done in extreme circumstances.
- I was to try to interrupt the fight as little as possible.
I was given the distinct impression that I was really just there to take any count! |
